Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale

The short story "Nathan Hale" by Nancy Hale shows how one young man gave up his life in honor of his country during the revolutionary war, not complaining and as an honor. I agree Nathan hale was a hero, because not many people agree to sacrifice their lives as just a sign of respect. Not regretting was one step he took.

"I only regret that I have not one life to lose for my country" his statements proves to me how much of a hero he was and his only regret was not having to offer more than his death. This shows he was determined to make changes and encouraged others to do the same. Nathan Hale did not hesitate on leaving his life at home behind he was determined to make change and pay his dues, kept his word and any job needed to be done he was sure to volunteer. The general said he wanted a spy, and Nathan did not hesitate on taking over the job despite all his friends trying to talk him out of the job because everyone knew that was not a safe job. But the job was necessary, Nathan thought if he didn't do it than who would. He believed in himself and went off and took the risk.

It didn't take long before Nathan Hale was discovered and demanded to be hanged for being a spy. At the age of twenty-one being engaged to a young lady named Alicia Adams he was hung. Before his death he had his last words not regretting one moment he went into the job. Also Hale left a wartime diary as proof that all along he was happy making the decisions he was. Not leaving any kids of his own behind or being able to live beyond of the age of twenty-one for him it did not matter as long as he felt at peace with himself and knew he accomplished all his goals.

I would not be able to put myself in his shoes that is why I consider him a hero. He was very brave in not being afraid of death. I would have probably never been as brave as Nathan Hale, having the courage to fight for his country and not caring about not being able to live his life fully. I would've listened to everyone around me telling me not to risk my life. I know it was not easy for him but nothing held him back, he kept his every word and completed all his goals. Someone who keeps their word and no matter how hard the situation may seem is considered a hero, therefore Nathan Hale was a hero himself.

In conclusion, I agree with the idea that Nathan Hale was a hero to many including his family and friends. He died with courage and one regret. He did not leave any kids behind on his own but left his memory to many, his story had a positive impact on people who were related to him or had an important role in his life. I look up to this story because not many would be satisfied with just giving their lives away and not getting anything in return but respect after their death.
