Metaphor

Metaphor means a comparison of two things that are unlike. We use the metaphor because it makes it easier for us to understand something we don't know to something we already know. That way we can compare or get an idea of what the thing that we don't know might be like. There are different types of metaphors used in different terms and each have their own meanings for example the simile is the comparison of two unlike things but using like or as. Example as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox. Personification is used giving animals or objects human qualities. Example fear knocked on the door. Faith answered. There was no one there. Anthropomorphism is used with god or gods, non human and also human characteristics such as jealousy, hatred or love. Example God created man in his image, and man, being a gentleman, returned the compliment. Hyperbole is an exaggeration or overstatement. Example The bag weighed a ton. Parable is a succinct story, in prose or verse, that illustrates a lesson. Example The fox said, No. If I do that, you'll sting me, and I'll drown. A fable is a succinct story which features animals, creatures, plants, objects, or forces by nature. Example They're sour,' said the fox. Animism has two definitions, one is it can refer to belief of the soul but however used in the that non-human entities have souls. Example "mother earth". Finally the Analogy is the comparison of two pairs which have the same relationship. The key is to ascertain the relationship between the first to choose the correct second pair. Part to whole, opposites, results of are types of relationships. Example "hot is to cold as fire is to ice".

The poem "The force that through the green fuse drives the flower" by Dylan Thomas shows examples of a metaphor. For example "Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees.." this is stating the relationship between the force of life and nature, by comparing the poets age and trees. This comparison is showing the close relationship between humanity and nature. By using the word "green" it shows the symbol of life and long term because green is life. This is an example of a fable. "My youth is bent by the same wintry fever" by using the word "bent" the poet is trying to compare whatever force bends the tree or flower to get older is the same bent that causes the human to die.

The poem "A Meditation for his Mistress" written by Robert Herrick shows an example of metaphor in this case it's comparing two unlike things but it makes it easier to compare what he sees. In the poem he compares the woman he's talking about as beautiful as a flower. "YOU are a tulip seen to-day" comparing her to a flower is his way of telling her she's beautiful. "You are the queen all flowers among" this shows the appreciation he has by just looking at her and by saying she's the queen of all the flowers obviously means there is no one above her or more beautiful than what she already is. "You are a sparkling rose i' th' bud," this saying is a metaphor because in reality roses don't sparkle but it shows that he was trying to make a relationship between the girl and a sparkling rose.

The poem "Success Is Counted Sweetest" shows the comparison of how success feels. "Success is counted sweetest" to become successful is the sweetest feeling and it's comparing it to the sweetest because the majority of people like sweets. "As he, defeated, dying, On whose forbidden ear" shows the strive the for success and no matter how hard it was and all the people who believed he wouldn't make it he proved them wrong even while dying. The poem "Beclouded" this poem decribes the comparison of how low the sky can be to the earth. "The sky is low, the clouds are mean" this stanza expressed how the sky is low and saying the clouds are mean comparing the clouds to a human feeling.
